My Lenses Great and Small

They called him Peasant Bruegel

The 16th century was the century of the Renaissance. The Italian Renaissance celebrated the beauty of man, as you can see in the works of Michelangelo, the famous sculptor and painter. The Renaissance in the Low Countries however did something completely different – it celebrated the peasants’ life and nature.

One of the great painters of the Flemish and Dutch Renaissance is Pieter Bruegel the Elder. As soon as I began to do some research about him (which included reading about him and going through his paintings) I became fascinated by his works and decided to create a squidoo page about him. There is one painting called The Fight between Carnival and Lent which I have been looking at for some time now and every time I look at it again I discover something new. By the way: Pieter Bruegel got his nickname “Peasant Bruegel” because he used to dress as a peasant in order to be able to participate in peasant festivities without being recognized as an artist.
